Tornado belonged to no one, though old ranchers liked to say the night itself had claimed him long ago.

He was a great black horse that concealed his identity with a black mask. Tall and muscled, he had a strong arched neck and a mane that streamed behind him like torn storm clouds. By day, he was only a rumor carried on wind and dust, but at night, when the prairie turned silver beneath the moon, Tornado came alive like a force of nature. Darker than the darkness around him, hooves drumming the earth like thunder, even the coyotes would fall silent when he passed.
